The Devil's Tale

( View with chords )

Lyrics

Sunday night I stayed out late
And went drinking with the devil
It was dark and dank and dripping crystal
In the cave beneath the temple
He said, "God believes in genocide
and incest, just ask Noah.
I believe in rock and roll
and southern California."

He clapped his hands to make the music
Which set the stage for drama,
Saying, "My music is amusing.
My muse is in the fauna.
God's is in the flora.
That's the start of fratricide.
I just want for once to tell
This story from my side."

The tale was a grippping one,
It drifted through my ears,
Regaling me with thoughts unheard
And bringing me to tears.
And while I was enraptured,
My attention fixed on him,
He popped his business collar
And the fire's light grew dim.

"Back in the beginning,
Back when the world was new,
God made man creatures curious
Where a tree of knowledge grew.
He claimed infallibility
And later lost his wits
When the people he made just like him had
Smartened up a bit.

He thought he'd start it over
So he washed it all away
When things cleared he ordered
All humans to obey
He set you up and pushed you down
And wasn't that a thrill?
He killed you all and then he ordered
You to never kill."

The lights inside the cavern
Grew dimmer as he spoke
He said, "You are just the punchline
To a cosmic fucking joke.
Born indentured servants
But promised something swell
If you don't want the torture
Then I'll see you in hell."
